The brewery was set up in May 2007 following two successful grant applications to DEFRA and Growing Routes, a former livestock buildings were converted into a purpose built brewery.

Amber coloured bitter with a citrus nose and is ‘for those who prefer a more robust ale’. The beers name is taken from an old Yorkshire phrase ‘the prickly backed urchin’ i.e. a hedgehog.

Orange Wheat Beer is a favourite of mine and Champion Beer at the 2005 Norwich Festival and a silver award at the 2009 SIBA East festival. Golden, slightly bitter but with a strong citrus and marmalade flavour. Gone Fishing is a strong golden ESB ale.

Seller of the UK’s biggest brand of bottled ale, Old Speckled Hen, Green King started brewing in 1799. In the last twenty years it has taken over such breweries as Ruddles and Ripley’s.

It also owns the Hungry Horse and Old English Inns, making it a giant amongst the breweries. XX Mild is a dark sweet mild while Abbot Ale is a full-bodied beer with a bittersweet aftertaste.

Started as a bootleg brewery until a raid from Customs and Excise, led to a court appearance and a £3,500 fine. After the court appearance, the custom officer forced the brewery owner to meet a local landlord, who wanted his pub to have its own brewery.

As they say the rest is history. The custom officer and brewer and now good friends. There is no mention of the Liberator beer on their website.

Both are described as a best bitter, with good malt and hop balance. Though Armanda is amber in colour, whereas Sussex Best is brown and fuller-bodied.

The brewery itself goes back even further, being founded in 1849. As the name suggests, Hooky Gold is a golden ale. Crisp and fruity with a citrus aroma.

The Keltek Brewery began life as a small in a stable on the Roseland peninsula in Cornwall, but is now based in Redruth.

Mr Murdoch Golden IPA is almost tangerine in colour with malt and hop flavours but not too bitter. William Murdoch was the inventor of gas lighting and coined the term gasometer.
