One of oldest of the “new world” wine producers, South Africa has a history dating back to the 17th century. Sadly, apartheid greatly reduced the number of quality wines being exported. However, since then, South Africa has started to reclaim its status as a top wine- producing nation with an equally impressive wine tourism scene. Give one of the following a try for a true taste of the Cape.

Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2009, Majestic, down to £7.99 when you buy two.

Currently on a great offer at Majestic when you buy two South African wines, this full-bodied white has just scooped a bronze medal at the latest Decanter world wine awards. A lovely pale golden colour with the faintest flicker of green which opens up to floral-wrapped pear aromas. The mouthfeel is rich, rounded and complex and leads to a lengthy and spicy finish.

Boschendal Classic Chenin Blanc 2009/2010, Majestic down to £5.99 when you buy two. Another top example of one of South Africa’s trump cards, Chenin Blanc. This offering from the cooler-climate coastal region shows great freshness which are trademarks of the newly released 2010 vintage. Passion fruit, honeyed and apricot lead – perfect for mid-week quaffing.

Bellingham, The Bernard Series Basket Press Syrah 2007, Sainsbury’s £10.99. A cracking Syrah that will not disappoint if you like your reds gutsy and muscular. Deep and intense to the eye with a nose of creamy blackberries and dark chocolate with a hint of vanilla. Chocolate can usually be a killer to red wines, however pop a bar of rich, dark chocolate in your basket when you pick up this wine and prepared to be wowed.

Forresters Back Shiraz Grenache 2004, Oddbins £10.99. Shiraz (aka Syrah) is rapidly becoming the up and coming grape variety in South Africa and this example expertly blended with Grenache is absolutely no exception. Showing plummy, earthy and peppery notes, this red was aged for 24 months before release which gives it the lovely and smooth mouth. Delicious on its own but just unbeatable with a platter of cured meats and cheeses.
