SHAKEAWAY founders Rob Hazell and Peter Moody returned to their roots when they opened Flirt Café Bar in the Triangle 18 months ago, aiming to re-create the chilled-out atmosphere of the Legend Café they ran back in the 1990s.

However, while they have succeeded in their aim, Flirt has since taken on a life of its own as an events venue, hosting live music, art exhibitions and performances, as well as a hugely popular weekly quiz, and the Bournemouth couple have embraced the change with relish.

“After we parted company with ShakeAway we wanted to open a café with a real lounge-style atmosphere which would appeal to everyone and I think we have managed it,” said Rob.

“But we weren’t expecting to get involved in all these events.

“Right from the start we had people coming in asking if they could play some music or exhibit their artworks, and it has really taken off.

“Flirt has become something of a community venue. One of our customers, who is 85, told me the other day that since we opened the Triangle has got a bit of an EastEnders’ Albert Square atmosphere, and people around there have got friendlier.”

As a café bar, open from 9am-11pm, Flirt serves a wide range of food to suit all times of day, all made in the café’s open kitchen so diners can see the chefs at work.

Food includes a buffet salad bar, sandwiches and paninis, and meals with a more unusual twist.

The opening times and, above all, the laid-back atmosphere mean evening visitors to Flirt may well spot customers enjoying a quiet pot of tea or coffee alongside a group enjoying the café’s selection of beers and wines on a night out.

For those with a sweet tooth, Rob and Peter, who celebrate the 25th anniversary of when they met this year, have brought with them from ShakeAway their signature milkshake recipes, made with chocolate bars and fresh fruits.

“It is hard work but worth it, Flirt is our favourite of all our businesses, and we are incredibly proud of it,” added Rob.

On Thursday Flirt celebrated a Non-Valentine’s Valentine’s Day event with games and activities, while tonight will see Bournemouth five-piece band Koda perform.

As well as the popular quiz night on Tuesdays, which has a six-week waiting list, the café hosts chess and book clubs, and an open-mic night is on the cards.
