SPORTING legend and property business owner, Julian Jenkinson, from the New Forest, has died at the age of 49.

From the age of 19, Julian pursued his passion for cycling and travelled the world as a triathlete before gaining the world record for British Iron distance in 1995, a title which he held until 2008.

After gaining a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Southampton, he bought his first student house in 1996 and went on to create Student NO FEE letting agency, building a portfolio of student and residential properties. He lived in the New Forest with his wife of just six months, Erica.

Julian had links to the Southampton Triathlon Club, New Forest Running Club, Tri UK and took part in races across America, as well as Lanzarote, Hawaii, Spain and France.

He has been described as somebody who lived for his sport, deemed by many of his competitors as still being at the top of his game. Friends have also said that he was inspiring, professional and always concerned about other people.

Avid cyclist and triathlete Chris Ray competed against Julian for more than 10 years and at the top of their careers they were considered rivals, competing together in the National, European and World Championships as well as for Team GB.

Chris said that Julian was 'a very special person who was genuine, unpretentious and let his talent in triathlon and cycling do his talking' and said that whether he won or lost, Julian had an infectious smile.

Richard Lies from cycling firm RaceNewForest said that Julian was really important in making the sport 'mainstream.'

Meanwhile Dave Savage from Savage Sports added that he 'couldn't think of too many people who have put more into sport in this region.'

He said that Julian was renowned for his cycling skills and described him as 'the best GB triathlete.'

Julian died on Saturday, March 19, after becoming unwell during a training ride in the New Forest.
