Holidays are times for rest and relaxation, and an opportunity to restore our body, mind and spirit in order to cope with the daily pressures of life. However, we can enjoy holidays or “holy” days all the year round. Setting apart a time each week and each day to renew our souls is a good activity throughout the year that can bring about physical and spiritual benefits to us. Jesus says: “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11 v 28).

ON July 17, 1810, in Seesen, Lower Saxony in north-west Germany, philanthropist Israel Jackobson held the first Reform service in the Temple in his school. Some 200 years on, Reform Judaism is flourishing. Bournemouth Reform Synagogue marked this special anniversary last Saturday with a civic service, attended by the Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Barry Goldbart, MPs and representatives from various faith communities.

FRENCH MPs voted this week to approve overwhelmingly a bill to ban the wearing of the Islamic full veil in public. Berengere Poletti, an MP from President Sarkozy’s UMP party, said women in full veils wore “a sign of alienation on their faces” and had to be “liberated”.
