THE ‘driving force’ behind a self-help support group who was known for her love of Cliff Richard has died aged 72.

Jan Mouland helped organise meetings for Breathe Easy Bournemouth, for people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

Jan, who lived in Branksome, became a member after being diagnosed with the condition herself and friends at the group said she had played a key role in keeping it going.

The grandmother, who grew up in Bristol, became a big Cliff Richard fan as a youngster. At the age of 16 she passed the exams to become a civil servant and was posted to a YMCA hostel in Bristol.

As was the custom for young civil servant ladies in the YWCA Hostel, she spent her days listening to Cliff and Elvis Presley and spending all her cash visiting the Colston Hall concert venue in the city, paying 12-and-a-half pence to get in each time.

Stars she saw included Shirley Bassey, Dusty Springfield and Connie Francis.

Jan’s big moment as a Cliff Richard fan came at her beloved Colston Hall when, at the age of 19, she crept in with a friend and spent time with The Shadows and Cliff. To their absolute joy Jan and her friend were allowed to remain in the wings and enjoyed a personal concert.

She remained a huge fan and her home was adorned with memorabilia including programmes and commemorative china.

Her husband, Norman, who died a few years ago, cheerily accompanied her to concerts and would salute her Cliff calendar every morning.

Despite her lung problems in the last six years Jan remained busy. She chatted on Cliff forums on the internet, still listened to her beloved Sixties music, ran a dominoes league and was secretary of Breathe Easy.

Jenny Negus, fellow Breathe Easy committee member, said: “She was the driving force behind it for the last six to eight months and she is going to be missed very much.”
