A MUCH-loved husband, father and grandfather, who worked as a chimney sweep for almost half a century, has passed away peacefully at his home.

Peter Sloane was born in Christchurch on December 16, 1950. One of nine children, he went to work with his father Alfred who taught him the trade of chimney sweeping.

At 17 Peter took over the family business, working in Dorset and Hampshire. He soon became known as very reliable, trustworthy and loyal, earning the reputation of being one of the best sweeps across both counties.

At the age of 24 Peter married Jeanette and, during 38 years of happy marriage, they had three children: Jennifer, Richard and Claire.

Peter’s family was very important to him and he was always there for them when they needed him. They shared many great memories including when the father-of-three became a grandfather at the age of 54.

Following the birth of their grandson Logan, Peter and Jeanette had three granddaughters: Holly, Megan and Amelia.

Peter had many interests. One was becoming a member of the National Association of Discharged Soldiers and Sailors (NADSS) club in Bridge Street, Christchurch.

Throughout his 24-year membership he served on the committee and was chairman for the last seven years. He and several other committee members worked hard to save the club from closure.

A big part of Peter’s life, he made many lifelong friends at the club where he pursued a lot of new hobbies and was part of the Darts, Dominoes and Golf Society.

A contented man, he led a very fulfilled and happy life.

Sadly on February 27, 2012, Peter was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus. He loved his job so much that he worked throughout his chemotherapy treatment, finally making the decision to close his business six months before he died.

Peter stayed strong and determined throughout his illness and was an inspiration to his family and friends. He died at his Somerford home, surrounded by his family, on March 2 and will be greatly missed by his loved ones and many friends.
