A SIGNIFICANT section of the Imax building is being demolished this morning, opening up more of the sea view for the first time in almost 15 years.
A 220-tonne crane moved on to the site on Bournemouth seafront on Monday in readiness to start pulling down the side of the building closest to the road – including the last ‘waves’ on top of the structure.
This morning it has been extended 68 metres high to hang a protective mat on the Bath Road side of the Waterfront building so demolition of the waves can begin.
Sarah May, project manager, said: “Work is progressing well. A larger 220-tonne crane has now arrived on site and over the next few days this will be used to position the protective matting on the flyover-side of the building so the deconstruction can continue along this elevation.”

Interserve, which is carrying out the work for the council, has been tearing deep into the doomed building on the seafront, with most of the beach side now gone and the middle section resembling a hollow shell.
Last week site manager Barry Lacey said the work was progressing on schedule without any hitches.
The demolition is due to be completed by the end of March and in April work will start on the new public performance space planned by Bournemouth council.
Until June workers will install lighting, carry out hard landscaping and put in handrails and balustrades.
