THE digital revolution has allowed the Regent Centre in Christchurch to diversify its satellite broadcasts of arts events from around the world.

The digital cinema launched at the venue in April and has joined existing seasons from Metropolitan Opera in New York, Bolshoi Ballet from Moscow and National Theatre from London will be the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet.

The first production from the Royal Opera in London will be Tosca, which is recorded by satellite and will be on screen at the Regent on Saturday, August 18 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

Powerful music, a gripping story and a tragic end are the ingredients of Puccini’s masterpiece.

The cast of Tosca includes Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Knuffmann and Bryn Terfel.

Set in Rome in 1800, the political atmosphere is one of control and suspicion.

Tosca is a beautiful diva who has fallen in love with an idealistic painter, Cavaradossi, whose beliefs and loyalties bring him into conflict with the malevolent Chief of Police, Scarpia.

Tosca is full of drama, passion and fabulous music, making it the ideal choice for the Royal Opera’s debut by satellite at the Regent.
