I HAVE just received my polling card for the Police and Crime Commissioner elections, but who are the candidates and what do they propose to do if elected? I have not received any information at all about these candidates. I went on-line and after much searching found four names on the Dorset Police website.

One is independent and the rest represent the usual political parties: Conservative, LibDem and Labour. Advertisements tell us they have the power to hire and fire Chief Constables and it is the public’s opportunity to say how they want their communities policed.

But how do we do this if the candidates are invisible? How can these candidates expect the public to cast their votes for them if we don’t know who they are and what their manifesto is. Come on, if you want this highly paid job tell us who you are and what you stand for?

Frankly, I am unsure why we need this further level of bureaucracy.

These Commissioners will be paid a salary of £85,000 a year plus of course they will need an office, staff and expenses so heavens knows how much they will cost the public.

Where does the money come from? The Police budget? Forgive me but we could have at lease two police constables on the beat for the price of these highly paid civil servants. If that’s the case, I know what I would prefer.
