IN 2004 I had to undergo major cancer surgery and have to thank Dr Carter and his urology Team at RBH for my survival and which has already extended my life well beyond what could reasonably be expected.

A fortnight ago was a routine annual checkup which showed everything to be OK.

However it is not only the surgical skills but importantly the after-care when a patient’s condition is carefully monitored.

I commend all the support staff in the urology department and am very grateful for the quality of care that is provided, especially in the face of unjustified financial pressures and constraints which require more work to be done by even fewer people year on year.

Whether the present Minister Of Health, Jeremy Hunt who has never worked in the health service, will listen to and act on the advice of experts in the field remains to be seen.

I hope he makes a better job of it than his predecessor!
