I AM writing in response to your anonymous correspondent’s letter entitled ‘an increasing sense of lawlessness here’ (August 24).

I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment expressed. Disregard for minor by laws has been a consistent theme of my postbag as a councillor for the past seven years. When minor misdemeanours are not addressed that often leads, in my opinion, to a feeling that a blind eye will be turned to more serious crime.

Police resources are very stretched however and their focus must inevitably be on more serious issues. That’s why I wholeheartedly support the extension of PCSO powers to Bournemouth council wardens. The presence of wardens, tasked with tackling petty crime and given the powers so to do, would undoubtedly improve your correspondent’s locality and more importantly be a vital step in discouraging the wider sense of lawlessness they describe.
