I AM responding to the story , encouraging ideas for Poole High Street improvement.

As a self-employed, local shopper with retail experience, we need an inclusive overall picture of what Poole needs.

The main problem for shoppers is lack of time and money and, for small businesses, sustaining a profit.

Shoppers should be surveyed to assess their needs and preferences.

Car parking charges should be low to encourage people to stay longer and spend more.

Business rates should be lower, for small business to thrive.

Poole Tourism Partnership fees could be lower to encourage more members and networking.

The paper could run a special two-page spread on High Street businesses – so that local people know all their local shops.

Boat taxis could provide easy access from Poole Quay – encouraging shoppers into the lower end of High Street.

A list and plan of all shops could be displayed on boat taxis and buses, especially Route 1.

Small shops could collectively produce publicity and have loyalty cards and bonuses.

Young people should be an important part of this project – we have a wealth of talent with art, media and business students and plenty of others with useful skills.
