THE letter dated May 5 titled ‘Town is unsuitable for trolley system’ written by D E Riley brought back memories of yesteryear to me.

For many years I worked in an office in St Peter’s Road, and, back in trolley bus times, as buses came around the bend in the road, the connecting rods would come off the wires and, more than once, broke a window in the top floor of Goadsby & Harding’s offices opposite as the rods swung in all directions.

I used to watch quite fascinated while the conductor got off the bus and, with a very long pole, put the connecting rods back on the wires.

They were obviously well practised in this as the operation usually did not take long, but it was interesting while it lasted. Perhaps we would have a slower pace of life if trolley buses ever come back, though I am sure they would be a great annoyance to drivers of today.
