I REFER to John Levesley’s letter in which he refers to the crash of a Mosquito plane in late July 1944, this tragic event happened on July 23, 1944 over Wallisdown, not Alma Road,Winton.
I think Mr Levesley is possibly confusing Alma Road with Alder Road, where the main fuselage fell near the Drill Hall.
I clearly remember watching, from a garden in Hood Crescent, Wallisdown.
My father, who was an off-duty fireman, rushed to the scene but could do nothing for the crew.
I also recall that, as there had been two such similar tragedies (the other being the Throop crash on the 1 June), both involving Mosquitos based at Hurn and crewed by Canadians.
As far as I know, there is no documented evidence of a plane exploding over Alma Road, but it was in this road that a land-mine caused a great deal of damage, including the destruction of Alma Road School.
