WITH reference to the article “Green waste bins debate heating up” (October 20) I would like to clarify one or two points.
Firstly, my proposal for an additional 11,000 bins, bringing the total number of bins to 33,000, would actually save the council more than £62,000 in the first year, not £32,315 as quoted. With a ‘free’ collection service at three-weekly intervals, it is anticipated there would be a significant diversion of green waste from black bins to green bins, thus saving the council around £184,000 in landfill tax.
The scheme is far more environmentally friendly than the charging scheme being proposed by the Conservative administration.
This scheme is predicated on a reduction in the total number of bins currently in use therefore not only making collection far less efficient – lorries travelling further across Poole for fewer bins – but it also sees virtually no savings on landfill tax.
Therefore it is clear that my proposal, funded trough the government’s landfill tax scheme, compares far more favourably than the charging scheme, which will tax residents of Poole in the region of £558,000.
