THE news that Bournemouth Council made a surplus of £1.6million last year will shock residents like myself who have campaigned against the closure of Day Care Centres and other services for the most vulnerable.

It was originally announced that closure of three Day Care Centres was necessary to save £495,000. Since then the ‘smokescreen’ of personal budgets and ‘giving people choice’ has been used to stop protesters from looking closely at the arithmetic to challenge the case for closures.

Now we know that we, as the Bournemouth community, can afford to provide these and other services within the present level of council tax contribution. Our councillors and officers should get on and do it without putting vulnerable people through the trauma that cuts cause.
