I CANNOT believe that the ‘Sally Ann’ meal team are being ousted from St Peter’s churchyard, ostensibly for a six-month trial period, with the coldest six months of the year upon us.

The alternative chosen site is Cotlands Road car park, hardly the most comfortable place to eat what is probably, the only hot meal of the day, for our local homeless people. Surely a nearby hall could have been found?

Mary Randell, MBE, with Rosemarie and the rest of the meal-run team do wonderful work with the least fortunate souls of our community, giving out hot food, tending to leg ulcers etc.

Mary washes their feet and provides them with clean socks and spare clothes and generally shows them that somebody cares about them.

I understand that it is necessary to keep the churchyard clean and attractive, but the team say they always leave the area as clean as when they arrive, so where is the problem?

Are our homeless offending the eye of someone?

Perhaps a carpet could be found to sweep them under; meanwhile I hope the people who have made this decision sleep well in their warm, soft beds.
