DOUGLAS Eyre suggests a merger of the three councils (Letters, September 23).

The Conservatives dominate all three town councils. They can show leadership on this issue by merging their constituency associations across the conurbation.

If Christopher Chope, Conor Burns, Tobias Ellwood and Robert Syms had one association headquarters with an office that managed fundraising, social events and their surgery work, they could have excellent facilities rather than managing their operations on a shoestring.

The councillors would then come together under one roof. By reinvigorating their membership, they could show how effective a unified authority could be and be an example to the Chambers of Commerce and other local institutions which duplicate their activities all across the conurbation.
