I WAS disturbed to read of the ongoing uncertainties regarding the Winton and Glenmoor schools (Daily Echo July 15). It is proposed that approximately seven teaching assistants jobs from each school are to be axed. Even more disturbing is the fact that Winton school for boys is currently in special measures.

It seems to me that both schools need a thorough overhaul in every department. For instance, why hasn’t each school got its own Headmaster (for boys) and Headmistress (for girls). Both these schools are the basis for our future generation – what could be more important?

The parents at both schools must be intensely worried, added to this is the increased uncertainty of parents whose children are due to start these schools in September.

With the new Government’s initiatives on changing unnecessary bureaucracy, and concentration on the 3 R’s, we can only hope that teaching careers will prosper, instead of the current doubt at taking up this hallowed profession.

As for unruly pupils, I have watched in horror at certain programmes on television, before the 9 o’clock watershed. On many occasions, children of all ages watching these are being set a bad example.

A massive re-think is needed on many aspects of our children’s upbringing.
