AS THE closing weekend of the Big Green Fortnight approaches, lots of people across Bournemouth and Poole have enjoyed the huge variety of low-impact events that have been put on by local authorities and lots of community groups and individuals.

It will be a short while before the feedback is analysed in order to gauge whether it has been successful in raising awareness of things that people can do or stop doing, that will reduce carbon emissions to protect our environment, but we hope that the impact will be positive and more people will volunteer to make more changes.

Meanwhile,in contrast to this genteel approach, the global backdrop is dramatic.

We learn this week that global CO2 emissions are increasing at an unexpectedly high rate, including those for which those of us in the UK are responsible, and that we are now unlikely to prevent global temperatures increasing by just two degrees and it is likely to be three or four degrees hotter by 2100.

This is the realm of ‘dangerous’ climate change. Please think about the seriousness of this because you can do something. Living a low-carbon lifestyle is doable, enjoyable, and healthy, and can avert this unspeakable disaster.
