I write in response to Mr Williams’ hysterical letter (Have Your Say, November 26) which could well worry social housing tenants all over the local area if his assertions are not corrected, the coalition government’s policy is that new social housing tenants will not have security of tenure for life. It is expected that there will be a review every two years of the person’s circumstances. If they still meet the criteria for occupying social housing their tenancy continues – if their circumstances have improved it is envisaged they will be given six months’ notice to move into the private sector.
None of this will affect existing social housing tenants who will, if they have it now, continue with their security of tenure for life.
This policy seems to me to be most fair and equitable – existing social housing tenants have no change in their lifetime and yet the system is changed over time so that, in future, only those who genuinely qualify for social housing occupy it.
Cllr Philip Eades, Branksome West Ward, Borough of Poole
