Newly retired, I recently tried to find a day-time web design course starting in Poole.

I tried Adult Education and I tried the local college.

I was hugely disappointed – there was nothing.

All the college courses were for full-time students, or were condensed courses, not ones where you attend weekly for a few hours.

And as for Adult Education, I was shocked how rundown and limited courses are.

The centre is a very old school in Oakdale, or otherwise you have to find your way across to Winton in Bournemouth for some courses.

Personally I think this lack of commitment in Poole to education and development for adults, along with over half of Poole Library closing down, is shocking.

What does this say of those running the council that adult education takes such an extremely low priority?

Perhaps it would be appropriate now to launch a fund and foundation for a new library and adult education complex in central Poole – not for business interests but for the people of Poole.

Indeed perhaps in memory of Dr Leverett and all his work for the town this could become the Brian Leverett Adult Education Foundation.

Personally I can think of nothing more fitting to someone’s lifetime work than investment in education.
