I am old enough and was near enough to have hung out the washing on the Siegfried Line, as the wartime song encouraged us to do.
However, I have lived in several properties where there was a covenant prohibiting washing being hung out on a Sunday and others regarding bonfires that might affect a neighbour’s clothes hung out to dry (In the line of fire, Daily Echo, October 13).
Convenient though it is, the electric clothes drier is an expensive and uneconomical way of completing the laundry – especially these days when money is not as cheap and free as the gentle breeze.
