As Neal Butterworth rightly observes, (Comment, August 4) our local councils do not want to provide either transit or permanent sites for travellers.
The ex-Bournemouth MP David Atkinson, (Have Your Say, August 5) says that Bournemouth is “unable” to provide a legal site.
No sir – the word is “unwilling”: because of prejudices towards travellers and because of an organised vociferous opposition, which also applies to wind farms and changes proposed in the New Forest banning dogs from a few car parks.
Some may call this democracy in action. It is not, it is simply middle class mob rule and as Margaret Thatcher would say, the authorities are running “frit”.
Bringing in consultants is a delaying tactic in the hope that a future government will release local authorities from their legal obligations in this matter.
It’s amazing. A month ago Bournemouth had no spare land, now it has over a dozen car parks available for development, plus the three rejected sites.
