THE present expenses controversy in Parliament is probably the best thing that could have happened.

It has forced the MPs to realise they are there to serve us, the people, and not themselves, and if it brings a few more independents who will vote with their consciences and not under orders, democracy will be restored.

Especially so if the party whips have less power and referendums are the norm for major issues, and as 70 per cent of our laws are now made in Europe we only need half of them.

But not voting should not be an option.

We need every vote to count for our particular candidate, be it Euro or local elections – so get out there and vote!

That is the only way we will get change.
