I WAS very pleased to read Cllr Trent’s letter (April 24) where he puts the trivia of much “mirror” party politics in context with the clear and overwhelming evidence that we are destroying our planet.

Climate instability is not abstract theory.

It is happening now.

But, tragically, as we are finding, it is the nature of democratic capitalism that braking is impossible.

We cannot brake, stop, or even slow down mass world consumption.

We find ourselves a global herd of 7,000 million homo sapiens devouring our planet.

No one is in control because the control we seek is, surely, our own individual control, which we refuse to exercise.

And with, to my mind, breathtaking irony we enter into a world recession – a mass slowdown of mass consumption – and all governments can think is: “Must consume more.”

The challenge for the world is surely to produce and distribute fairly.

But how can we ever achieve this when democracy ends up no more than government of popularity? “This is what I want, give it to me, or I won’t vote for you”.
