IN a letter in your paper (Feb 21), David Leadbetter stated the “results of the 1975 referendum, when the British people voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU."

First, I cannot remember there being an EU in 1975.

The fact is we were given a vote by Ted Heath to join the Common Market. This would mean we could travel through every border without stopping in every country to go through customs, although we might have to show our passports.

No mention was ever made about an EU or even a common currency. We were then led step by step into the EU by the same Ted Heath.

We never joined the Euro thanks to Mr Brown who would have nothing to do with it. The only vote we were given was by David Cameron, who asked us if we wanted to leave and yes, we voted by a majority to leave.

To be fair to our current leader, she seems to want to still get a Common Market-type agreement. We are a great nation, with many countries outside the EU waiting for us to join them. Given the right leaders I feel sure we will do well—as we did before the EU was invented.
