I FULLY support the Echo campaign to keep Poole’s public toilets open.

As a council taxpayer, I would be prepared to see 2p of my council tax ring-fenced to keep the toilets open.

The council will argue this is a matter for next year, so here are some suggestions for funding this year’s costs:

  • Take the £300,000 from the millions of pounds in the current council balances – after all when the disastrous takeover by Bournemouth (sorry merger) is approved in June or July, Bournemouth will spend all of our balance across the new super council region;
  • Each councillor should forfeit £2,500 of their current basic allowance – they are all to blame for the stupid decision to close the toilets – this will raise £105,000;
  • There are five sets of toilets at Poole Civic Centre offices – close one set on each floor. This will save at least £20,000 a year – only a few yards to walk for councillors and staff, not the miles we, the public, face.

Poole council must act now or there will be a second River Piddle in Dorset.
