IN response to the letter from Raymond Chilcott (Daily Echo, February 15), the footpath and cycleway works are an integral part of the delivery of the Stour Valley Masterplan which aims to improve access along the Stour Valley between Hengistbury Head and Millhams Mead Nature Reserve.

These improvements support the council’s efforts to improve accessibility to the natural environment while also providing better options for those who want to get out of their cars and enjoy our precious green belt.

Bournemouth council has utilised specific grants from the government as well as developer contributions to fund these works. I would emphasise that no local council funding has been used.

I am pleased to say that sections of the Stour Valley route already completed have proved very popular so far, with walkers, cyclists, families and mobility scooter users.

With limited public funding available for anything at all, the council will continue to try to strike a balance between the competing priorities of all the residents we have been elected to serve and take up funding opportunities as they arise.

CLLR JOHN BEESLEY

Leader of Bournemouth council, Town Hall
