I WRITE as a past East Dorset District Council chairman in 2013 and councillor until May 2015. I have to take issue with Alderman Douglas Eyre and his unfair criticism of MP Chris Chope.

Chris is, and has been, MP for East Dorset and Christchurch for many years and his duty is to represent the wishes, concerns and aspirations of all residents within his constituency, which is precisely what he is doing.

Looking at the proposal to create super authorities, likely to mean East Dorset and Christchurch becoming part of greater Bournemouth and Poole, this procedure has so far been shrouded in secrecy even from most councillors, led by a cabal of senior unelected officers. The public consultation has been unrepresentative, biased and will be ignored in this case.

Should this amalgamation take place, Christchurch and East Dorset will cease to exist and so will any heritage. Local Authorities have, and are still, required to make savings.

Both our councils, by sharing officers, have saved many millions and have led the way in maintaining services. Let us see Bournemouth, Poole and the county combine as was the case years ago and make similar savings on a much larger scale.

Without local representation and planning control, all decisions will pass to Bournemouth or Dorchester and we will have lost any democratic objection or refusal. Decisions on planning, large or small, are not all currently decided in Dorchester.

This is what Chris Chope is trying to ensure. Our councillors need to consider the implications, not be led by party lines and vote accordingly.
