THERE have been a number of letters in the last few days regarding seafront issues and rubbish on the beach and I thought it a good idea to address them all in one go.

The Seafront Operations team carry out both planned and reactive enforcement activity, working where possible with the police, around cycling on the promenade and dogs on the beach.

The planned activity is undertaken to raise awareness of the restrictions for both cycling and dogs on the beach. It also involves pointing out the dog-friendly areas of the beach and times of the day / year when responsible cycling is allowed.

Reactive enforcement is carried out every day by our staff when situations are identified that require intervention. This may result in information being given out, warnings made or, if necessary, Fixed Penalty Notices being issued.

There are over 200 litter bins on the Promenade alone, all of which are regularly emptied. As there can be no excuse for anyone dropping litter or leaving rubbish for others to clear up, litter enforcement is now undertaken for the Council by 3GS, a private contractor, who are empowered to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for littering offences.

We would ask that all visitors to the seafront show respect for both the environment and all other visitors by walking dogs on the dog-friendly areas of the beach, observing the restrictions on cycling on the promenade between 10am and 6pm in July and August, and helping the excellent Beach Cleansing staff by placing litter in the plentiful bins situated along the beach.

More information for beach visitors can be found at bournemouth.gov.uk.
