I JUST heard today that Australia is keen to pick up trade with UK now that we are leaving the EU.

Some argue that new trade deals could take up to 10 years to organise.

The Aussies do not mess around with bureaucracy like the EU – they reckon it will be done a lot quicker.

I hope too that New Zealand will also join them.

I am old enough to remember prior to the EU (Common Market) when we had such great trade with that part of the world. New Zealand lamb was always a favourite and the best that we always looked out for.

On joining the Common (EU) Market, I felt at the time (along with many), that we stabbed those far-off regions in the back when New Zealand lamb, butter etc., was no longer in our stores.

I now feel so humbled that those countries want us back – we do not deserve it.

The Australian spokesman spoke so well and said we have the same culture and the same Queen.

We have never shared either with continental Europe and I alone feel a lot closer to Australia or New Zealand than anybody in France, Germany, Spain or wherever within Europe.
