IN RESPONSE to Mike Roberts-Butler’s letter (Echo, May 21), a while ago my son and I were in Lidl’s car park when we were approached by the driver parked next to us.

He, too, had a map, claimed to be Italian and was asking for directions to the ferry port in Kent.

He offered me an expensive-looking watch to keep, saying he’d been to a "sale" at the BIC, then offered two more watches.

He casually mentioned that he needed money for petrol and asked if we could give him £10.

This made me suspicious so I refused, saying we had spent our money on shopping, and naturally returned the watches to him, whereupon his whole attitude became far more unpleasant.

The following week I found out that someone had been approached in a similar way in the Tesco car park nearby.
