MAY I please debunk the “facts” according to Vicky Sharp in her letter to you (‘EU costs steel jobs’, April 22). We do control our own borders. We are not part of the Schengen agreement within which there are no passport controls. Anyone coming into this country has to go through passport control, including residents of the UK. Not all EU citizens are economic migrants. They are a mixture of students, visitors, specialists etc and can come here the same as we can, and do, go to other EU countries (approximately two million).

The EU does not set or control business taxes. Business rates are set by local councils. Corporation tax is set by the British parliament. Our fuel costs are determined by the supplier with VAT set by our government. Carbon emission taxes have been lowered by our government and the EU sets reduction targets, not taxes.

We need to reduce our carbon emissions, or does Ms Sharp want to live a polluted world? Ever seen a London pea souper? It was this government that objected to raising tariffs on Chinese steel because they didn’t want to upset them because they are building nuclear power stations for us.

Jeremy Corbyn understands the dynamic of the EU, that it does need adjusting and big business needs to work for its customers and its parliament needs more teeth and the commissioners need side-lining, but by leaving we throw away 40 years of cooperation, building a better Europe where its citizens can come and go without hindrance.

Could I please also ask that both the fors and antis get their facts right before writing to you? A couple of minutes with your PC should do it.
