PRESENTING an argument for leaving the EU, the Daily Echo chose to print the reasons given by my EU-sceptic MP Conor Burns (April 10). I’m not sure this was wise.

Mr Burns opens his argument with a quote from Lord Denning. Strangely the quote is not Lord Denning’s but was said by Lord Salmon and is hardly relevant as it specifically concerned defining reasonable doubt within a court case.

Mr Burns continues by insisting the nub of the EU debate is to put our UK government back in control of the country. Would his Lord Denning have agreed? As Denning famously said: “The House of Commons starts its proceedings with a prayer. The chaplain looks at the assembled members with their varied intelligence and then prays for the country.”

Mr Burns then argues that the large trade deficit we have with our EU trading partners would ensure the present tariff-free trading relationship can continue.

Yet we also have a large trade deficit with China which doesn’t stop them, for instance, dumping steel onto us.

Mr Burns ends with the ridiculous suggestion that foreign students are prevented from studying in this country because of the EU.

I struggle to see any merit in Conor Burns’ arguments for Brexit. Indeed, Brexit arguments which stack up appear to be as rare as hens’ teeth.
