COUNCILLOR John Beesley has made spirited defence (Echo Letters 5/10/2015) of the way councillors are remunerated.
The amount of money saved is significant – it tries to show that Bournemouth councillors wish to lead by example.
But in the bigger picture it is totally overshadowed by the burden the government is imposing in unprecedented cuts on local councils, including Bournemouth council.
On September 1, the Local Government Association, which is Conservative controlled, issued a dire warning saying that local councils already faced a £10 billion black hole and that local councils could not cope with further cuts.
The Scottish Labour Party recently complained it was treated as little more than a branch office of the central office in London.
Is Bournemouth council and indeed all the other Dorset councils treated in much the same way, carrying the can as it were for unpopular policies determined in Whitehall?
