I WOULD like to know who was the bright spark who thought it was a good idea to run a traffic census along the A347 Whitelegg Way on Thursday morning, May 14.

This involved those taking the census stopping cars eight at a time on the highway, with each set of questions taking several minutes to be completed.

The resulting tailbacks caused was stupendous – judging by the queues leading up to the Northbourne Roundabout, this was probably affecting commuters as far back as Parley Cross and Bear Cross.

I understand the need for up-to-date commuter information as an aid to planning future road improvements, but surely there would have been a better time to do this than in the middle of rush hour as people were trying to make their way to work?

It seemed every car was being stopped and there were no arrangements for cars to pull off to the side to allow others to pass, so travellers had no option other than to take part in the survey.

Frankly, and I am sure I speak for anyone caught up in the chaos, this was poorly thought through at best. Absolute madness.
