ON Thursday I voted in the General Election in the Poole constituency (held by the Conservatives since at least 1950, with large majorities) but my voice was not heard.

Like thousands of others in Poole who do not want to vote Conservative, our voices, our beliefs and our opinions are not represented at Westminster due to the current electoral system of ‘first past the post’, where the winner takes all.

This is not a full participative democracy.

The time for electoral reform is long overdue.

Westminster MPs should be elected by a system of ‘proportional representation’ where all votes count and all views are fully represented.

At the same time, the current House of Lords should be abolished and replaced with a fully elected, smaller second chamber, while the number of constituencies in the Commons should be reduced, with more power and decision making authority being devolved to the regions of the UK.

Only when all the views of the electorate are represented will we have a fuller, revitalised democracy in the UK.
