THE latest fatal accident on the M27 should be yet another wake-up call to the Highways Agency of how unsuited the region’s main roads are for the amount of traffic using them.
It must be time now to introduce a part-time 50mph limit for the entire length of the M27 and certain sections of the A31. This would only add 10 minutes to the journey time of anyone travelling the whole 25 miles of the M27, for example. I know I’d rather drive for that extra time at 50mph than be sat stationary for hours. I also know that accidents can still happen at 50mph, but they would rarely be of the road-closing nature.
