I am writing in response to the recent letter from Susan Dennett calling for ‘caring canine’ dogs to be allowed at Bournemouth Crematorium.

As the portfolio holder for planning and environment, I have discussed this matter at length with my officers and while I sympathise and understand the concerns raised, we have to consider the needs of all those who attend services and that there are those who may be uncomfortable with dogs attending.

It was with the comfort of all our visitors in mind that we took the decision to put in place Dog Control Orders, which prevent dogs from attending unless they are trained by a prescribed charity and upon which a person relies for assistance.

We must remember the sensitive nature of the service at the crematorium and it is for this reason I fully support Linda Barker, bereavement services manager and Gary Josey, service director housing parks and bereavement services in their decision.
