NOT unusually for this time of year, I am about to attend my third funeral since Christmas. I remain unable to understand why Bournemouth Crematorium is out of step with everyone else in its insistence upon excluding all dogs except those permitted by statute. Our use of dogs for all sorts of assistance and support purposes has grown enormously over the years and, in particular, most recently in the Hounds for Heroes organisation. These animals provide valuable services and for many are a lifeline. Crematoriums elsewhere recognise this value and the importance attached to such dogs being permitted to attend funerals.

There are discretionary powers available within the statute law which applies permitting managers to look at each case individually. Given the small numbers, this would not be an onerous task but Bournemouth Crematorium persists in its heartless and uncaring approach and maintains a hidebound exclusion policy.

The phrase “Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men” springs to mind.
