On Wednesday my mother, who is just months away from her 90th birthday, went to the bus stop in Christchurch to catch the 9.30am Wilts & Dorset bus to Lymington.

It actually arrived at 9.28am, which was two minutes before its advertised time.

When she got on the bus she was told by the driver that she could not use her bus pass as it was 9.28am and you could not use your bus pass before 9.30am.

She had to leave the bus and wait at the bus stop in the pouring rain for another half an hour until the 10am bus arrived.

When she told me this I found it unbelievable for two reasons. The first is that surely the bus should, at least, wait until 9.30am to allow for other passengers to arrive in time to catch the bus and also for people to be able to use their bus pass.

The second reason, which I think is much more serious, is that a bus company and its driver could behave in this way to a person of my mother’s age – showing no sense or decency.

I have telephoned them today for an explanation but by this evening I have not received a call explaining their behaviour.
