The front page headline of Monday’s Echo about the elderly man in hospital following an altercation with a pavement cyclist raises once again the problems faced from this growing menace.

Even on Banks Road at Sandbanks where Poole Council provided cycle lanes – at not inconsiderable expense – I am confronted by several cyclists on my regular morning walks.

If they are challenged, most just ignore you, some dispute that they are not allowed to cycle there. On the narrowest parts they expect you to move out of their way!

You will see pavement cyclists even on Ashley Road weaving in and out of shoppers, mothers with prams and disabled buggy users.

Before the local authorities in Poole and Bournemouth spend any more money on cycle lanes etc, lets have a serious educational programme. It could be “PAVEMENTS ARE FOR PEDESTRIANS” or it could be abbreviated “PATHS R4 PEDS” -perhaps photos of these cyclists could feature in ‘We’re in the Echo’.

The problem is that cycling and also parking vehicles on the pavement has been condoned by the police for so long that it has become a regular practice.

The police can have purges on motorists, let’s see them try to eradicate this problem.
