Carl Richards is entitled to his beliefs on climate change and I would fight to the death to give him that right because he seems a thoroughly likeable chap (‘The climate will suffer’, April 3).

I’m concerned about Carl because he seemed to be extremely anxious when he and Dr Martin Rogers from a previous letter, (‘Mankind is in deep trouble’, March 24) shouldn’t be.

As far back as 1992 a petition by eminent scientists trying to tell the world, politicians and the media that global warming is false was put forward in the Heidelberg appeal. Today more than 4,000 signatures, including 72 Nobel Prize winners from 106 countries have signed it.

The reason we have so much nonsense on climate warming is that the hysteria simply represents the scientific illiteracy of many combined with the susceptibility of substitution of repetition for truth.

The notion of static, unchanging climate is foreign to the history of the Earth or any planet with a fluid envelope. To date no claim on climate change can be shown to have been peer reviewed, a process whereby eminent scientists specialising in a given subject can agree on the research.

So don’t worry, relax and be happy!
