Did Mike Unsworth, the project director for Navitus Bay, watch too many episodes of Yes, Minister?
His letter seeking to reassure residents and businesses that his project will not have a detrimental effect on the town’s tourist industry, indeed may even improve it, is filled with meaningless words and phrases.
“No significant adverse impact,” is interpreted as “evidence that Navitus Bay will not affect the attractiveness of the region” – quite a leap.
A small scaling back on the northern boundary is expected to “significantly reduce its visible impact” – have we not already been assured that the turbines will be barely noticeable so where is the scope for significant reduction in impact?
Apparently tourism in other areas where turbines have been sited has been unaffected – but are these areas where the economy is largely dependent on tourism? Everywhere there are doubts, uncertainties and questions. No rational person would be prepared to risk irretrievable damage to their economy when there are so many doubts. Until there are absolute assurances that Navitus Bay will be held financially accountable for damage to the town’s economy as a result of the wind farm are provided, no sane person would play Russian roulette with the life and prosperity of our town.
