THE annual clampdown on cyclists is a waste of valuable and ever-decreasing police resource.
Studies have shown lights and hi-vis do nothing to prevent accidents.
If motorists aren’t looking properly when they drive then cyclists and pedestrians will bear the brunt whatever their visibility.
Any well-lit regular bike commuter will attest to this. This is ‘easy target’ policing with no research to back it up.
It is, however, estimated that between one and two million motorists would fail an eye test and are thus unsuitable to drive a motor vehicle. Yet these tests are rarely if ever administered.
As they take only a few seconds to carry out, why don’t the police do an eyesight test on everyone they stop?
It would start to weed out those who should not be driving and would have a significant effect on road safety for all of us.
A much better use of their valuable time.
