AT last the police are to clamp down on bicycle lighting. I trust that the only safe way was as in my cycling days, a dynamo running off the rear tyre.

Modern cycles do not seem to be equipped with a bracket to lodge a white light front or red light rear. These stupid flickering mini lights on heads, belts or bikes are almost as bad as no lights at all.

The Think Bike campaign for motorcyclists was only effective when they were lit as they are so narrow in sight lines when travelling at speed.

However a £50 fine seems a possible deterrent if backed up with something else if disregarded.

When I was young the magistrates court was continually fining cyclists at five shillings for front and five shillings for back lights if not working. I haven’t seen batteries and bulbs for such lamps for a long time.

Why stop at bikes? Skateboarding on main roads seems to be practised by some idiots.
