I MUST respond to the letter from Angela Pooley, East Dorset Friends of the Earth (‘Support for wind farms’, Echo July 4). Of course Friends of the Earth are happy to support the industrialisation of our bay and beaches by this grotesque wind farm. It fits neatly with their energy policy, which sadly our government seems to have adopted word for word.

But then, FoE seemingly doesn’t give a care about the huge subsidies added to our gas and electricity bills to pay for this folly and others like it, when cheaper and more reliable sources of energy are available.

If you really were a ‘friend of the Earth’ Angela, surely you wouldn’t wish to see this massive industrial complex, with 200 giant turbines, each taller than most London skyscrapers, erected just a few miles from our treasured coastline, beaches and areas of outstanding natural beauty? The harm to bird and marine life will also be enormous. At a time when many other countries – some much ‘greener’ than the UK – are calling the value of offshore wind farms into question, surely it is time for the UK to think again before sleepwalking into this costly environmental debacle.
