I WOULD like to bring to the attention of readers a tragedy that occurred on Thursday March 27, 1941 which resulted in the biggest loss of life in one war time bombing incident in Poole.
The 72nd anniversary of which is remembered next week.
The bombing of the Bourne Valley Gas Works resulted in the deaths of 33 gas company workers. Their ages ranged from 14 years to 63 years.
Having witnessed this incident and seeing the bombs drop from the plane, I have amassed over the years a wealth of detail which is probably the biggest collection anywhere.
My reason for writing is that I am compiling The History of Branksome and The Bourne Valley and make a request, not to other witnesses of this air raid, (although that could be welcomed), but specifically to the families of the men who were killed and seeking photographs, where possible of the deceased.
There are only three known official photos of the devastation caused but if others are known that would be a bonus.
I can be contacted by e-mail at firsteuph@yahoo.co.uk.
